What a Coilover Actually Replaces
A coilover kit replaces your factory spring-and-strut assembly with a combined unit where the spring rides on a threaded collar around the damper body. That threaded collar is the whole point — it lets you physically raise or lower ride height independent of spring rate, instead of being stuck with whatever height your factory springs happened to land at. Twin Tube vs. Monotube — The Real Difference

A monotube design uses a single cylinder with the piston running directly through oil and a pressurized gas chamber — simpler, generally stiffer, and it dissipates heat faster, which matters most under sustained hard driving where a damper can otherwise start to fade. A twin tube design nests an inner working cylinder inside an outer reservoir tube, which tends to deliver a more compliant, comfort-oriented ride at the cost of some ultimate performance ceiling. Neither is objectively better — they're built for different jobs, and the right one depends on whether the car in question is a daily driver or a track toy.
What "24-Way Adjustable" Actually Means
Adjustable damping lets you tune how the shock resists compression (the wheel moving up into the car) and rebound (the wheel extending back out) independently, usually through a dial or clicker at the top or bottom of the strut. More clicks means finer control, not necessarily a better shock — a well-built 16-way kit can outperform a poorly built 32-way one. What matters more is the range those clicks actually cover: whether the softest setting is genuinely comfortable and the stiffest setting is genuinely track-capable, or whether the whole range is bunched up in the middle.
The Installation Reality Check
This is not a weekend-warrior bolt-on the way an intake is. Installing coilovers means a full suspension teardown — struts, springs, sometimes control arms depending on the platform — and an alignment is mandatory afterward, not optional. Ride height changes change your suspension geometry, and skipping the alignment shows up fast as uneven tire wear.
